Major General Smedley Darlington Butler was a legendary United States Marine Corps officer who served his country for 34 years. Throughout his distinguished career, he participated in numerous conflicts including the Philippine–American War, the Boxer Rebellion, the Mexican Revolution, World War I, and the Banana Wars. At the time of his death, Butler was the most decorated Marine in U.S. military history.
Renowned for his incredible bravery and leadership, Butler was one of only a few individuals to receive the Medal of Honor twice for separate actions, alongside the prestigious Marine Corps Brevet Medal. His exceptional leadership extended into World War I, where he commanded Camp Pontanezen in France, becoming the youngest general officer in Marine Corps history.
Following his retirement in 1931, Butler became a prominent advocate and speaker on military and political matters. His legacy remains as one of the most celebrated and highly decorated combat leaders in the history of the United States armed forces.
